Who this policy is for

This policy covers the Movie Spot website and its browser-based movie guessing game. “We” and “our” refer to the operator of Movie Spot. For privacy questions or requests, contact support@moviespot.co.

You do not need to register or provide a name or email address to play. Even without an account, running a saved game involves processing information about your browser session and your actions. Embedded video providers also receive information directly from your device.

What happens when you play

Movie Spot processes your selected difficulty, movie searches, submitted answers, skips, current clue stage, and round outcome to deliver the game. Search text is used to find matching titles. The server stores the current round, attempts, recent movie selections, and request identifiers associated with a randomly generated session identifier. These records support answer checking, refresh recovery, duplicate-request handling, and reduced repetition.

A session identifier is not your name, but it allows us to recognize requests from the same browser. Game progress does not automatically synchronize across browsers or devices. Unlimited results remain private unless you share them. Daily Challenge results appear on the leaderboard only after you choose Publish my score.

Cookies and information on your device

Movie Spot itself uses the following browser storage:

  • Game session cookie: moviespot_session_v1 connects your browser to its saved game on our server. It is configured to expire 30 days after it is issued. Blocking it prevents normal session continuity.
  • Daily game cookies: moviespot_daily_v1, moviespot_spotle_v1, moviespot_framed_v1, moviespot_moviedle_v1, and moviespot_emoji_v1 are HTTP-only cookies holding a random player identifier for Daily Challenge, Spotle Movie, Framed, Moviedle, and Guess the Movie Emoji. Each one restores that game's attempt for the current day and is valid for up to one year. Daily Challenge also uses its cookie to calculate your streak.
  • Local progress marker: moviespot:progress:v1 stores the current round identifier, revision, and difficulty in local storage. The authoritative game state remains on the server. This marker has no automatic browser expiration and may remain until overwritten or cleared.
  • Appearance preference: local storage may remember your light or dark theme preference.
  • Referral cookie: if you arrive through a link containing a referral-source parameter, utm_source may remember that source for up to 30 days.

Google Analytics and Google advertising services may also set or read their own cookies, as described in the analytics and advertising sections below.

Your browser settings let you inspect, block, or remove cookies and site storage. Clearing the session cookie can make your previous round inaccessible. Removing local data does not, by itself, delete records already held by us or a video provider.

Video playback and external services

Movie Spot uses YouTube's embedded player and player software. Loading the player can contact YouTube or Google before you press Play. Their services may receive your IP address, browser and device information, page or referrer information, identifiers, and playback interactions. Their processing depends on the service, your settings, and whether you are signed in to a Google account.

Google describes its handling of this information and available controls in the Google Privacy Policy. YouTube playback is also subject to the YouTube Terms of Service. Movie Spot does not receive your Google password or control Google's retention of information. Blocking third-party requests may prevent trailers from playing.

Hosting, network, security, and email providers may process the information needed to deliver pages, protect the service, or handle support messages. This can include IP addresses, requested URLs, timestamps, browser details, and error or security records. Providers may process data in countries other than your own; applicable safeguards are required where data-protection law calls for them.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics to understand how visitors find and use Movie Spot, such as which pages are visited, how long visits last, and which browser, device type, and approximate region are involved. Google Analytics uses cookies such as _ga and _ga_*, and Google receives your IP address and browser information when the analytics script loads. We use these aggregated reports to improve the games and fix problems; we do not use Google Analytics to identify you personally.

You can block analytics cookies in your browser or install the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on. Google explains how it processes this information in How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services.

Advertising

Movie Spot may display ads served by Google AdSense to keep the games free. Third party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on a user's prior visits to this website or other websites. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to Movie Spot and/or other sites on the Internet.

Because ads are served on this site, Google and other third parties may place and read cookies on your browser, or use web beacons, IP addresses, or other identifiers, to collect information for ad delivery, frequency capping, measurement, and fraud prevention. We do not send your name, email address, or other personally identifiable information to Google in ad requests.

You may opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google's Ads Settings. You can also opt out of some third-party vendors' use of cookies for personalized advertising at www.aboutads.info or, in Europe, www.youronlinechoices.eu. Opting out of personalized advertising does not stop ads from appearing; ads you see may instead be based on the page content or your general location.

Whether personalized ads are shown depends on the applicable requirements in your region, your choices, and the advertising configuration. Where a consent message is presented, use its available choices to manage the advertising data uses described there. Learn more in How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services.

Sharing results and contacting support

Saving or copying a result creates the ticket image or text you choose to use. If you select a social platform or another sharing destination, the information you send is handled by that destination under its own policies. A saved result is not automatically published to a Movie Spot leaderboard.

When you email us, we receive your email address, message, and any attachments you include. We use them to respond, investigate the issue, and maintain relevant correspondence. Send only information needed for the request, and never send a session cookie, password, or access token.

Why we use information and when we disclose it

We use the information described above to operate rounds, restore sessions, provide search and results, diagnose faults, limit abuse, measure how the site is used, show ads that keep the games free, and answer support or rights requests. Where applicable law requires a legal basis, we rely on the basis appropriate to the activity: providing the requested service, legitimate interests in maintaining a reliable and secure game, compliance with legal obligations, or consent where required. You may withdraw consent for processing based on consent without affecting its earlier lawfulness.

We do not sell personal information. We may disclose relevant information to providers supporting the service, in response to a lawful requirement, or when reasonably necessary to investigate abuse or protect legal rights. If ownership of Movie Spot changes, relevant records may transfer with the service, subject to applicable safeguards and notice requirements.

We share information with Google for analytics and advertising as described above. If we add other analytics or advertising providers, we will update this policy and provide any notices or choices required before the new processing begins.

Daily Challenge and the leaderboard

Daily Challenge uses a separate HTTP-only cookie, moviespot_daily_v1, valid for up to one year. It identifies this browser so we can restore your daily attempt, allow one attempt per UTC day, and calculate your consecutive-day streak. We store the daily movie lineup, your guesses, score, start and completion times, and progress. Your ordinary Unlimited session is separate.

If you choose Publish my score, your nickname, score, correct-guess count, completion time and streak become public on that day's leaderboard. Do not put contact details or other private information in your nickname. You can remove today's publication from the Daily Challenge result screen in the same browser. Removing the publication clears its nickname and hides it from the board; it does not reset your attempt or erase the underlying gameplay record. Clearing cookies does not delete stored results and can prevent you from managing an existing result; contact support if you need help with deletion.

How long records remain

Saved server sessions have a 30-day validity period that can be extended by game actions. The browser cookie has its own expiration described above. Session expiration stops a saved session from being used; it is not a promise that every related database record is automatically erased on that date.

Support correspondence, security records, and provider logs can have different retention periods. We retain information for the purposes described in this policy, including resolving requests and meeting applicable obligations, and review information for deletion when it is no longer needed. Contact us about a specific record or deletion request. No storage or transmission method can guarantee complete security.

Your choices and requests

Depending on your location and the applicable law, you may be entitled to access, correct, delete, or obtain a copy of personal information, restrict or object to processing, withdraw consent, or complain to a data-protection authority.

Email support@moviespot.co with your request. Because the game does not require an account, we may need additional context to identify relevant records and verify that you are entitled to make the request. We will explain what is needed; do not send secret session values by email. Some records may need to remain for legal or security reasons, and we will explain applicable limits when responding.

Children and policy updates

Movie Spot is intended for a general audience, not specifically for children. If you believe a child has provided personal information that should not have been collected, contact us so we can investigate and take appropriate action.

We will revise this page when the service or its information practices change. The date above identifies the latest revision. For material changes, we will provide additional notice or request consent where required.
